Objectives

Students following the Master’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Science and Technology – Training and Sport Performance Optimisation develop design, management and assessment skills for training, sport performance optimisation and return-to-sport programmes. It is multidisciplinary course which combines scientific (life sciences, human sciences, social sciences, engineering sciences), technological and professional learning.

Master’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Science and Technology: Sport Management

Pathway: Sport Service Policies, Assessment and Development

Objectives

The Sport Service Policies, Assessment and Development pathway of the Sport Management Master’s Degree is a two-year vocational and research course. The aim is to provide students with general, scientific, technical and professional training.
Students on the Master’s Degree in Sport Management at the Nantes Université learn all there is to know about creating, developing and assessing sports, leisure and local development projects.   
The teaching is geared towards:

  • learning to use assessment tools

  • acquiring the skills and qualifications needed to provide consultancy and development services within sports organisations and bodies, both public (local, district, or regional sports services) and private (sports clubs, leagues and federations, sports equipment companies, sports service providers).

This Master’s Degree offers students a course programme which combines knowledge (sociology, law, administration and management), skills (research, assessment, etc.), soft skills (autonomy, rigour, career development) and hands-on experience (work placements, professional seminars, case studies and dissertations).

Master’s Degree in Teaching, Education and Training – Teaching Physical Education in Secondary Schools

The Master’s Degree in Teaching, Education and Training – Teaching Physical Education in Secondary Schools combines theory, teaching practices and several placements to enable students to acquire the skills needed to teach P.E. in secondary schools. It also prepares students for the French CAPEPS exam (competitive exam to be able to teach P.E. in secondary schools).

Objectives

People become teachers because they want pass on knowledge and give pupils a taste for learning. Teaching is a profession which requires training. This Master’s Degree puts a strong accent on practical training and enables students to familiarise themselves gradually with the profession. The course combines closely interlinked theory and practice with placements in schools or other educational establishments. It is taught at INSPE (Higher National Institute of Professorship and Education), a university school which is part of the Nantes Université, in partnership with the faculties of sport science (UFR STAPS) at the universities of Nantes and Le Mans.

Programme

This Master’s Degree is designed to prepare students for teaching P.E. in secondary schools. It includes a range of complementary subjects to ensure students acquire the necessary skills to become a Physical Education teacher.

The course aims to prepare students for the external CAPEPS exam, and if they pass, to successfully obtain a post in the French education system. However, it also has the broader objective of ensuring teachers are able to adapt to all kinds of pupils and education systems, with the idea of accompanying them in developing their professional skills throughout their career.

The goal is to produce autonomous and organised professionals who can take initiatives, make decisions and work in a team. The work methods and materials used across all course modules will therefore aim to develop these fundamental skills. The Master’s includes several work placements to enable students to discover the world of teaching and to gradually gain the professional experience they need.

Master’s degree in Science and Technology of Physical and Sporting Activities (STAPS) : adapted physical activity and heath

Objectives :
The Master’s degree with a specialization in APA-S (adapted physical activities and health) is a brand new Master’s degree from the STAPS department of Nantes Université (year one, M1, was rolled out in September 2022; year two, M2, in September 2023). It has a specific pathway “Evaluation and rehabilitation of motor and cognitive systems” (EVEREST) that examines how motor and cognitive systems, which are often deficient in vulnerable groups (for example, people with functional and metabolic disorders, ageing-related sensorial and motor impairments, and chronic diseases) can be stimulated by adapted physical activities (APAs) for preventive health care, rehabilitation activities, and health preservation.

The objective of this APA-S Master’s course is to train practitioners (for example, the professional title of APA teacher [enseignant en APA] is awarded to APAS Bachelor’s degree graduates) whose job it is to carry out strategic and operational functions in private or public-sector organizations for users with specific needs. The degree course covers how to provide expertise, evaluation, coordination, management and development activities that are designed to optimize care through adapted physical activity.

Besides the general methodological skills, the following specific APA professional skills are also targeted:

  • Advanced and specialized use of digital tools;
  • Developing and integrating highly specialized knowledge;
  • Developing and improving resources and skills assessments of users with disabilities and/or specific needs;
  • Developing, planning and coordinating APA-S action projects;
  • Supervising and training for an APA project.

This is an apprenticeship training course.
Apprenticeship training courses enable graduates to better adapt and integrate their APA-S teaching activities and plans to the professional environment and social context. They also allow companies to benefit from formalized relationships with universities to effectively monitor the apprentice-training-company relationship. In this regard, transferring skills (knowledge, professional know-how, and professional attitudes), putting these skills into practice, and adapting them to the needs of patients/users are high priorities for companies in the Sport and Health sector. As well as enhancing apprentice employability, alternating between theoretical and practical training is an excellent way to develop and enrich APA teachers’ professional experience.
