Les Journées d'études internationales du RERIS (Réseau des études des relations internationales sportives) se dérouleront à Nantes les 15 et 16 juillet prochains. Pour cette 10e édition, ces journées auront pour thème "Sport et relations internationales. Un état des lieux".

English presentation

In 2015, Grégory Quin and Philippe Vonnard organized the first meeting of the Réseau des études des relations internationales sportives (International Sports Relations Studies Network) in Barcelona. Since then, the research collective has held subsequent conferences in Barcelona (2016 and 2017), Köln (2018), Lausanne (2021) and online (2022, organized by our colleagues in Warsaw). Bringing together historians, as well as political scientists, anthropologists and sociologists, these conferences have resulted in new research on sport during the Cold War, international sports organizations and leaders, women leaders in the history of international sport, the economics of international sport, and on bids to host or lead major sports events that have failed to come to fruition (De Gruyter forthcoming).

Since its initiation, the network has also inspired new connections and fostered further exchange between an international group of researchers. Several significant academic exchanges have resulted from these connections, including a 2017 workshop organized in Strasbourg on the transnational history of sport, two summer schools for young researchers, held in Lausanne in 2019 and 2021, and then Oslo in 2022, and an international congress organized in 2023 in Nantes on Cold War and sport. Ten years after the initial RERIS congress held in Barcelona, we will celebrate in Nantes in 2025,  while reflecting on the state of research in the field of  international sports relations. We also aim to highlight ongoing and new challenges facing research in this field.

This year, the Congress proposes to address the following topics:

  • International sports and the "Global South" ;
  • Socio-history of international sports organizations or Sports international governance as a subject of social sciences ;
  • Sports and international relations: national state of the field ;
  • Key concepts of sports and international relations: towards "sports/sport/sporting diplomacy"; "transimperial/global/transnational/international... history"; "Competition ;
  • Sports, international relations and environmental issues ;
  • Body politics and international sports organizations ;
  • Sports, international relations and public history ;
  • Sports and international relations using digital and quantitative approaches.
